Prostate Cancer Treatment in MexicoDiagnosis and surgery, explained in English.
Dr. Guillermo Cueto Vega, urologist with training in urologic oncology, offers precise diagnosis and laparoscopic or open radical prostatectomy at Star Médica Mérida.

A high PSA or an abnormal biopsy result raises urgent questions. The first answer: not every prostate cancer needs immediate surgery, and the decision depends on the stage, the grade and you.
When surgery is the right option, radical prostatectomy can be done laparoscopically — through small incisions — or as open surgery, depending on the tumor and your anatomy.
Second opinions are welcome. Bring your PSA history, MRI and biopsy report and we will review them with you.
When to reach out
A high or rising PSA A biopsy showing prostate cancer, and you want options or a second opinion An abnormal digital rectal exam Blood in the urine or semen Urinary symptoms that are getting worse Family history of prostate cancer
Treatment options
PSA and digital rectal exam
The first screening tests, recommended from age 50 (or 45 with risk factors).
Ultrasound or MRI-fusion guided biopsy
Tissue samples to confirm or rule out cancer. MRI fusion targets the most suspicious areas seen on imaging, improving accuracy and avoiding unnecessary procedures.
Staging and individualized plan
MRI, bone scan or other studies as needed to define the stage, then a clear discussion of options: active surveillance, radical prostatectomy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy or combined approaches.
Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy
Removal of the prostate and seminal vesicles through small incisions, for localized cancer. The approach is chosen according to stage, prostate volume, anatomy and surgical history.
Open radical prostatectomy
The same surgery through an open approach, when the tumor or the patient history make it the most appropriate option.
The right option depends on your case. Dr. Cueto recommends a treatment only after reviewing your history and studies.
Cost and planning your trip
Treatment takes place at Star Médica Mérida, a private high-specialty hospital certified by Mexico’s General Health Council (Consejo de Salubridad General) — at a significantly lower cost than in the US or Canada. Because every case is different, we do not publish a single price: you receive an itemized written quote before you book anything.
Your personalized plan includes:
Surgeon and team fees Hospital: operating room and stay Anesthesia and supplies Pre-operative evaluation and indicated studies Follow-up visits Recommended length of stay in Mérida
How long to stay? It depends on the procedure and on your case, so it is defined individually and included in your plan — you will know before you buy your flights.
Recovery and follow-up from home
Recovery depends on the procedure: a biopsy is outpatient, while a radical prostatectomy involves a hospital stay and a urinary catheter for the first days. Continence and erectile function usually recover progressively over the following months. Your stay in Mérida, catheter removal and long-term PSA follow-up are planned with you before travel, with direct WhatsApp follow-up from home.
Frequently asked questions
Does a high PSA mean I have cancer?
Not necessarily. PSA can rise with benign enlargement, prostatitis, infections, recent sexual activity or intense exercise. A high value must be investigated, but it is not a diagnosis.
Does every prostate cancer need immediate surgery?
No. Low-risk tumors can be managed with active surveillance — periodic PSA, MRI and control biopsies — an option supported by international guidelines.
Will I be incontinent or impotent after surgery?
The risks exist, but current techniques aim to preserve both functions as much as possible. Most patients recover continence in the months after surgery, and erectile rehabilitation is planned from the start.
Can I get a second opinion remotely first?
Yes. Send us your PSA results, MRI and pathology report over WhatsApp or through the form, and Dr. Cueto will tell you whether a visit to Mérida makes sense for your case.
