Erectile dysfunction (ED) treatment in Mérida, Mexico

Stem Cell and PRP Therapy for ED in MexicoWhat the evidence says, and what to consider instead.

If you are researching stem cell or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy for erectile dysfunction in Mexico, you have probably seen clinics promising to "regenerate" erections in a few sessions. Before you book a trip or pay for a package, it helps to know where the science and the law actually stand.

Dr. Guillermo Cueto Vega is an English-speaking urologist in Mérida, Mexico. He does not offer stem cell or PRP therapy for erectile dysfunction. This guide explains why, what to check if a clinic offers them, and which treatments have solid evidence behind them.

What these treatments are

Stem cell therapy for ED usually means taking cells from the patient's fat or bone marrow and injecting them into the penis, with the idea that they help repair blood vessels and erectile tissue.

PRP therapy (sometimes sold as the "P-shot") concentrates platelets from the patient's own blood and injects them into the penis, on the theory that their growth factors stimulate repair.

Both sound reasonable, and both are being studied. The problem is that "being studied" and "proven to work" are not the same thing.

What the evidence says

The American Urological Association (AUA) erectile dysfunction guideline states that, for men with ED, intracavernosal stem cell therapy should be considered investigational (Statement 24), and that PRP therapy should be considered experimental (Statement 25).

In practice, that means the studies so far are small, use different methods, and do not yet show how well these treatments work, for whom, or for how long. Outside of a formal research study, there is no standard dose, schedule or proven result.

What Mexican law requires

In Mexico, the General Health Law (Ley General de Salud, articles 315 and 341) requires that facilities and providers using stem cells for treatment or for experimental procedures have the corresponding health authorization. The National Academy of Medicine of Mexico has warned that a growing number of establishments offer stem cell services without official health authorizations.

If a clinic offers you stem cell therapy, these questions protect you:

  • Can you show me the health authorization (COFEPRIS) for this facility and for this procedure?
  • Is this part of a registered research study, and will I sign a consent that describes it as experimental?
  • Did you evaluate the cause of my erectile dysfunction before offering a package?
  • Are you promising a result? (No serious treatment can.)

What works for erectile dysfunction

Most men with erectile dysfunction have an identifiable cause, and the treatment depends on it. With an evaluation first, these are the options with solid evidence that Dr. Cueto offers in Mérida:

  • Correcting the cause: medications that affect erections, diabetes, blood pressure, cholesterol, smoking or sleep apnea.
  • Oral medication, properly prescribed and adjusted (dose, timing and molecule make a real difference).
  • Hormone therapy, only when lab tests confirm low testosterone.
  • Intracavernosal injections, highly effective even when pills did not work.
  • A penile prosthesis, the definitive surgical option when other treatments have not worked.

Frequently asked questions

Does Dr. Cueto offer stem cell or PRP therapy for ED?

No. The evidence is still investigational for stem cells and experimental for PRP. He offers treatments with solid evidence and starts by finding the cause of your erectile dysfunction.

Are stem cell treatments for ED legal in Mexico?

Using stem cells for treatment or experimental procedures requires a health authorization under the General Health Law. Ask any clinic to show you its authorization for the facility and the procedure before you pay.

Is the "P-shot" the same as PRP therapy?

"P-shot" is a commercial name for platelet-rich plasma injected into the penis. The American Urological Association considers PRP therapy for erectile dysfunction experimental.

What can I do instead?

Get an evaluation to find the cause. Depending on it, the options are correcting risk factors, properly adjusted oral medication, hormone therapy when a deficiency is confirmed, injections or a penile prosthesis.
