Enlarged Prostate Surgery in MexicoHoLEP laser, in English, in Mérida.
Dr. Guillermo Cueto Vega, urologist certified by the Mexican National Board of Urology with high-specialty training at UNAM, treats BPH with HoLEP laser enucleation at Star Médica Mérida — at a significantly lower cost than in the US or Canada.

Getting up several times a night, a weak stream, the feeling that your bladder never quite empties: benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is one of the most common conditions in men over 50. It is not cancer and it does not turn into cancer — but it rarely improves on its own.
HoLEP (Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate) removes the tissue that blocks the flow of urine through the urethra, with no external incisions. It works for prostates of any size, and because the tissue is removed rather than vaporized, it can be sent to pathology.
Not every case needs surgery. The first step is always an evaluation — if medication is enough for you, that is exactly what you will hear.

Treatment options
HoLEP laser surgery (technique of choice)
Endoscopic holmium laser enucleation, with no external incisions. Effective for prostates of any size, removes the obstructing tissue completely, allows pathology analysis, and is designed to preserve erectile function and continence whenever technically possible.
TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate)
The classic endoscopic reference technique for moderate-size prostates, with no external cuts. Indicated when HoLEP is not the right fit for specific reasons.
Rezum water vapor therapy
A minimally invasive option under light anesthesia for small or moderate prostates in selected patients. It treats the prostate with water vapor and preserves ejaculation in most men; improvement is gradual over the following weeks.
Medical management
Medication (alpha-blockers, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors or a combination) when symptoms are moderate and surgery is not yet needed.
The right option depends on your case. Dr. Cueto recommends a treatment only after reviewing your history and studies.
Cost and planning your trip
Treatment takes place at Star Médica Mérida, a private high-specialty hospital certified by Mexico’s General Health Council (Consejo de Salubridad General) — at a significantly lower cost than in the US or Canada. Your personalized plan includes:
Surgeon and team fees Hospital: operating room and stay Anesthesia and supplies Pre-operative evaluation and indicated studies Follow-up visits Recommended length of stay in Mérida
How long to stay? It depends on the procedure and on your case, so it is defined individually and included in your plan — you will know before you buy your flights.
Recovery and follow-up from home
Most minimally invasive procedures involve a short hospital stay. Relief of obstructive symptoms is usually noticeable within the first weeks. How long you should stay in Mérida before flying home depends on the procedure and on your case — we tell you on first contact, and you receive written instructions (catheter removal, activity, travel) before discharge, with direct follow-up over WhatsApp once you are back home.
Frequently asked questions
Does an enlarged prostate mean I have cancer?
No. Benign prostatic hyperplasia is, as the name says, benign: it is not cancer and does not turn into cancer. Symptoms can overlap, though, which is why a proper evaluation matters. With HoLEP, the removed tissue is sent to pathology, which adds certainty.
Why HoLEP instead of GreenLight laser or other techniques?
They work differently. GreenLight vaporizes tissue: it is less effective in large prostates and leaves no sample for pathology. HoLEP removes the tissue completely with a holmium laser, works for prostates of any size, and the tissue is analyzed. Dr. Cueto performs HoLEP, TURP and Rezum, and will tell you which one fits your case.
Can laser surgery cause impotence or incontinence?
Modern laser techniques are designed to preserve erectile function and continence. The risks exist, but they are considerably lower than with traditional open surgery. In your evaluation, Dr. Cueto explains the specific risks for your case.
How long do I need to stay in Mérida?
It depends on the procedure and your case, so it is defined individually — you will know before you book your flights. Send us your case and we include the recommended stay in your personalized plan.
How much does HoLEP cost in Mexico?
Significantly less than in the US or Canada, in a private high-specialty hospital. The exact amount depends on the technique your case needs, so we send you an itemized written quote — surgeon, hospital, anesthesia, studies and follow-up — before you decide.
