Urinary Incontinence TreatmentFor women and men, in English.
From pelvic floor rehabilitation to minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Guillermo Cueto Vega evaluates the type of incontinence you have and treats the cause — at Star Médica Mérida.

Leaking when you cough or laugh, or a sudden urge that does not let you reach the bathroom, is common — but it is not a normal part of aging, and it is not something you have to live with.
There are different types of incontinence, and each one is treated differently. That is why the first step is identifying yours: many patients improve without surgery.
For men who developed incontinence after prostate surgery, there are effective options too.
When to reach out
Leaking when you cough, laugh, sneeze or lift Sudden urgency with trouble reaching the bathroom Urinating more than 8 times a day Getting up two or more times a night Dribbling after urinating Using pads for fear of leaks Avoiding exercise, travel or intimacy because of leaks
Treatment options
Pelvic floor rehabilitation (Kegel exercises)
A guided program to strengthen the muscles that support the bladder and urethra. First-line treatment for many patients; done correctly, it can bring meaningful improvement without medication or surgery.
Medication
Anticholinergics or mirabegron for overactive bladder, chosen according to the type of incontinence, age and other health conditions.
Neuromodulation and botulinum toxin (Botox)
Minimally invasive options for urge incontinence that does not respond to medication.
Mid-urethral sling
Minimally invasive surgery, considered the gold standard for stress incontinence in women: a tape supports the urethra through a small incision.
Artificial urinary sphincter
An implanted device for selected cases of severe incontinence, especially in men after prostate surgery, that lets the patient control urination.
The right option depends on your case. Dr. Cueto recommends a treatment only after reviewing your history and studies.
Cost and planning your trip
Treatment takes place at Star Médica Mérida, a private high-specialty hospital certified by Mexico’s General Health Council (Consejo de Salubridad General) — at a significantly lower cost than in the US or Canada. Because every case is different, we do not publish a single price: you receive an itemized written quote before you book anything.
Your personalized plan includes:
Surgeon and team fees Hospital: operating room and stay Anesthesia and supplies Pre-operative evaluation and indicated studies Follow-up visits Recommended length of stay in Mérida
How long to stay? It depends on the procedure and on your case, so it is defined individually and included in your plan — you will know before you buy your flights.
Recovery and follow-up from home
Most incontinence treatments are outpatient or need a one-day stay. After sling surgery, patients usually go home the same day or the next and resume light activity in one to two weeks, avoiding strain, lifting and intercourse for about four to six weeks. Your stay in Mérida and follow-up plan are defined with you before travel.
Frequently asked questions
Is incontinence a normal part of aging?
No. It is more common with age, but in most cases there is an identifiable cause and a treatment that clearly improves quality of life.
Do Kegel exercises really work?
Yes, when they are done correctly and consistently. Technique is the key — it is taught in your consultation.
I leak after prostate surgery. Is there a solution?
Yes. It often improves in the first months with pelvic floor rehab. When it persists, options like a male sling or an artificial urinary sphincter are chosen according to severity.
Is sling surgery permanent?
It has good long-term results in well-selected patients and is a lasting solution for many women. Like any surgery, it has risks and no result can be promised; that is why each case is evaluated first.
